Program specifics about earning a Medical Office Specialist Diploma at Northland.

Program Description

Medical Office Specialist Diploma graduates are highly trained office specialists who are responsible for the coordination of the day-to-day medical office functions of patient appointment scheduling, telephone communications, medical record maintenance, medical transcription, and patient billing processes. Successful medical office specialists have excellent communication skills and exhibit a high degree of professionalism in their work. Emphasis areas available in the major include medical insurance and coding.

Program Accreditation

Northland Community & Technical College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Program Learner Outcomes

  1. Student will demonstrate professional business communication in writing and speaking.
  2. Student will use correct medical terminology in all healthcare applications.
  3. Student will utilize appropriate technologies for healthcare applications.
  4. Student will prepare and manage records according to healthcare standards.
  5. Student will demonstrate professional workplace habits, including punctuality, attitudes, and behaviors expected of the medical office specialist profession.
  6. Student will perform diagnosis and procedure coding accurately and properly.
  7. Student will apply correct insurance procedures to medical office specialist tasks.
  8. Student will provide optimal, professional services expected by patients and employers while performing required administrative duties.
  9. Student will demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills in a variety of medical office specialist situations.
  10. Student will demonstrate interpersonal skills through effective listening, written, and oral communication in diverse situations.
  11. Student will exhibit professional, ethical practice, including confidentiality and other security and HIPAA requirements.

Important Information About Course Credits

Starting August 2027, the Medical Administrative Assistant program will not accept credits earned through unaccredited online learning platforms like StraighterLine, Sophia, and Study.com for program completion. Credits issued by these entities will not be assessed for program acceptance or count toward program completion after August 2027. As you start your program, identify if the timeline allows for these course credits. For more information, contact the program’s advisor.  Students are encouraged to utilize the test out process if they feel they meet requirements of the course.
