Northland Community & Technical College will host a special dedication ceremony on Saturday, January 31, honoring Deb Jacobson, Northland’s first Women’s Athletic Director and the founder of its women’s basketball, volleyball, and softball programs. The event will take place between the women’s and men’s basketball games against Minnesota North–Vermilion, beginning at approximately 2:30 p.m. in the Northland gymnasium.
The ceremony will officially name the women’s locker room in recognition of Jacobson’s 34 years of leadership and commitment to Northland athletes (1973–2007). Jacobson was instrumental in building Northland’s women’s athletic programs from the ground up following the passage of Title IX, leaving a lasting impact on generations of student-athletes.
In conjunction with the dedication, Northland is introducing the Legacy Athletics Fund, a new initiative designed to provide ongoing support for student-athletes and strengthen the college’s athletic programs. Contributions to the fund will help sustain the tradition of excellence Jacobson helped establish.
President Shari Olson reflected on Jacobson’s influence:
“Deb Jacobson is a true pioneer. Her vision and determination opened doors for countless women to compete, grow, and lead. This dedication is a tribute to her extraordinary legacy and the opportunities she created for future generations.”
Athletic Director Kelsey McLean added:
“Deb’s impact on Northland athletics cannot be overstated. She built programs that have stood the test of time and inspired a culture of success. We are proud to honor her contributions and continue her work through the Legacy Athletics Fund.”
The women’s basketball game tips off at 1:00 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 3:00 p.m. Fans, alumni, and community members are invited to attend and celebrate Jacobson’s remarkable career.
