Northland announces 2018 Workforce Development Scholarship recipients

Scholarships totaling $40,000 were awarded to incoming students who enrolled in high-demand career fields

APRIL 16, 2018 – Northland Community & Technical College (NCTC) is pleased to announce its Workforce Development Scholarship recipients.

In 2017, the Legislature created the Workforce Development Scholarship program and appropriated $1 million in fiscal year 2019 to Minnesota State encouraging students to enroll in high-demand programs at all state colleges. This year, Minnesota State will pilot the scholarships program, awarding $2,500 scholarships to 400 new students. NCTC was allocated 16 scholarships totaling $40,000 to award for the 2018-2019 academic year. To qualify for the scholarship, students must be enrolled in one of four high-demand career areas: advanced manufacturing, agriculture, health care services, or information technology.

“The legislature has certainly stepped up and recognized the important role community colleges play in developing our workforce,” said Dr. Dennis Bona, NCTC President. “This is a great win for both students and employers at a critical time in our local economy.”

“With high demand for skilled workers in these program areas right here in northwest Minnesota, the Workforce Development Scholarship program matches our incoming students with needed funds for the right programs to help meet these employment needs,” said Lars Dyrud, Executive Director of the NCTC Foundation. He added, “Student loan repayment programs after graduation are nice when available, but the real barriers are on the front end when the pressure is on to balance class loads, pay bills, and make important decisions about career goals. This program is the right way to go, and we hope it will continue to be offered into the future.”

There are many other scholarships available at NCTC through the NCTC Foundation, whose mission is to enhance the educational experience of students. The Foundation distributes over $150,000 annually in scholarships. Support and generous investments from local businesses, individuals, and programs make these scholarship opportunities available to NCTC students.
