Northland Awards $180,000 in Workforce Development Scholarships

Scholarships awarded to 72 area students pursuing high-demand career fields

September 18, 2020 – Northland is proud to announce the 72 recipients of the Minnesota Workforce Development Scholarship. Scholarships totaling $180,000 for the 2020-2021 school year will be awarded in this initiative.

Beginning in 2017, the Minnesota Legislature created the MN Workforce Development Scholarship allocating over $1 million in funds to encourage Minnesota’s graduating seniors to enter high-demand fields at one of Minnesota State’s colleges. The 2019 Legislative session resulted in a supplementary $2 million earmarked for students for this school year. To qualify for the scholarship, students must be enrolled in one of six high-demand career areas: advanced manufacturing, agriculture, early childhood education, health care services, transportation, or information technology.

“This initiative supported by the Minnesota Legislature highlights the giant impact that Minnesota State’s colleges have on the education of the state’s workforce. Their continued support is much appreciated,” states Northland President Dennis Bona. “We are excited to be able to award a large number of these scholarships to area students. The results should be a boon for Minnesota’s workforce.”

Since its conception in 2017, Northland has awarded over $282,000 in Workforce Development Scholarships.

“Before the pandemic, the State Legislature in Minnesota increased its funding this year for even more scholarships to students entering high-demand career areas. This fall, we are distributing 72 scholarships to students in qualifying programs at Northland,” shares Northland Foundation Executive Director Lars Dyrud, “The program has been successful so far in attracting students to these career fields and businesses that are in desperate need of qualified employees. Job openings in Advanced Manufacturing, Agriculture, Early Childhood Education, Health Care Services, Information Technology, and Transportation continue to be high demand areas in the state and our region, and Northland offers programs in each of these areas. Having a $2,500 scholarship is a huge help to students and an incentive to complete their program.”

The Northland Community & Technical College Foundation, whose mission is to enhance the educational experience of students, offers scholarship opportunities semi-annually to current and incoming students. With the generous support and investments from individuals and local businesses, the Northland Foundation distributes over $150,000 annually in scholarships.
