Northland Community & Technical College traces its roots back to 1949, when the Minnesota State Board of Education approved the creation of an area vocational school in Thief River Falls. Over the decades, that institution evolved, expanded, and merged with other respected colleges to become the comprehensive institution known today as Northland Community & Technical College.

Northland’s history is built on the combined legacies of three institutions dedicated to serving students, employers, and communities throughout the region. The college first emerged through the merger of the Thief River Falls Area Vocational School and Thief River Falls State Junior College. Later, Northland joined with the East Grand Forks campus of Northwest Technical College, creating a unified, two-campus institution with a broad academic and technical mission.

As higher education continued to evolve, Northland expanded beyond its physical campuses through online and distance learning opportunities, extending its reach far beyond the Red River Valley and northwestern Minnesota.

East Grand Forks

The history of Northland’s East Grand Forks campus began in December 1971 when the local school district was designated as an Area Vocational Technical Institute (AVTI). The first classes were offered in January 1973 in rented facilities, reflecting the community’s commitment to expanding access to technical education.

In April 1975, the campus moved into its current facility, establishing a permanent home for students and programs. Over the years, the institution continued to grow through strategic partnerships, program expansion, and organizational changes that reflected Minnesota’s evolving higher education landscape.

One of the campus’s most significant transformations occurred in 1992 when it became part of Northwest Technical College, a consolidation that united six technical colleges across the region. In July 2003, the East Grand Forks campus of Northwest Technical College merged with Northland Community & Technical College in Thief River Falls, creating the comprehensive college that serves students today.

Thief River Falls Campus

Northland’s Thief River Falls campus has the longest history of the institutions that now make up the college. Its story began in 1949 with the establishment of the Thief River Falls Area Vocational School, which initially operated from several locations throughout the community.

In 1965, Thief River Falls State Junior College welcomed its first students at Lincoln High School, expanding opportunities for higher education in the region. For several decades, the vocational school and junior college operated as separate institutions, each serving distinct educational needs.

A major milestone occurred in July 1995 when the two institutions merged to form Northland Community & Technical College. The college continued to grow and strengthen its academic offerings, earning accreditation and expanding its impact across northwest Minnesota.

In July 2003, Northland merged with the East Grand Forks campus of Northwest Technical College, creating the two-campus comprehensive college that continues to provide educational opportunity and workforce training throughout the region.
