June 21, 2022 – Future college students will now have the opportunity to bolster their mathematics skills and ease the transition to college courses with Northland’s Summer Scholars Academy. The Summer Scholars Academy is a free program that will run from July 12 through August 3, 2022, on Northland’s East Grand Forks campus.
Participants in the Academy will spend four weeks intensively focused on mathematics. The program is designed to center on developmental math principles in an effort to make the transition to college algebra easier and help candidates complete the course. Candidates who participate in the program could potentially avoid taking developmental math courses before enrolling in college algebra, saving time and tuition costs. The program has limited seats to ensure one-on-one instruction.
“We are excited to offer the Summer Scholars program for the first time. It’s a great opportunity for students to get individualized help to increase their math skills,” said Director of Northland’s Academic Success Center Sara Johnson. “Along with math instruction, we will provide short workshops to acclimate students to our campus environment. Our goal is for students to be able to access services needed to be successful and to feel a sense of belonging at Northland.”
In addition to mathematics, students will get guidance on time management, financial literacy, navigating college, and more. Participants will also get a chance to socialize with classmates, enjoy the college experience, and have full access to Northland’s student services and financial aid staff, who can assist with future enrollment.
“Northland has so much to offer, and this is an amazing opportunity for students who are part of this phenomenal program. Students learn first-hand about the various wrap-around services at Northland,” shared Shamani Shikwambi, Northland Dean of Liberal Arts, Business, and Technical Programs. “They will get to meet our amazing staff over the summer and start building student-staff relationships which are critical in navigating and being successful in college as they are working on achieving their educational goals.”
Students who complete the academy will receive a $150 tuition stipend for their fall semester enrollment in classes at Northland.
