February 4, 2022 – The Minnesota Association on Higher Education and Disability (MN AHEAD) has named a new president-elect.
Sara Johnson, Director of the Academic Success Center (ASC) at Northland Community & Technical College, will assume the role in June 2022.
MN AHEAD provides support and networking opportunities and education to professionals working with secondary and post-secondary students with disabilities. MN AHEAD has approximately 65 members from various regions of Minnesota.
Johnson says she is grateful for the opportunity to serve on the board of MN AHEAD. “As a participating member, I’m given the opportunity to network with others in my field to stay current on changes in accessibility for students.” Johnson continues, “Having access to online learning communities to ask colleagues questions about how to serve our students better and receive feedback is invaluable.”
Johnson illustrates, “In the short time I have been on the MN AHEAD board I have had the pleasure of working with the most caring and knowledgeable group of people who truly have students in the forefront of every decision they make.”
In addition to MN AHEAD, Johnson is a member of the national AHEAD organization. This membership opens up a variety of professional training and networking opportunities across the country for Johnson and her staff.
As director of Northland’s Academic Success Center, Johnson and staff offer free services to all students, such as course tutoring and exam prep. They also help students with documented disabilities obtain and implement classroom and exam accommodations.
When Johnson settles into her role as President, she and the board will be working on adding an equity and inclusion position to their team as the first order of business.
