“Building Community Through Service” at NCTC’s 2017 State of the College Luncheon

President Bona delivered the State of the College Address on Oct. 19.

Northland Community & Technical College (NCTC) hosted the 2017 State of the College Luncheon on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017. The address featured Northland President Dr. Dennis Bona discussing the theme of the event, "Building Community Through Service", in NCTC's East Grand Forks campus commons. The event was co-sponsored by the Chamber of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks.

"Building Community Through Service" expanded upon the new Service Learning Program and the vision for students at NCTC to gain learning experience within the community. Dr. Bona shared how the Service Learning Program will contribute to students overall academic success while providing support to the community. During the event, an overview of NCTC’s enrollment and new programs was provided. In addition, the Engelstad "Never Too Late" Scholarship Challenge was announced.

The NCTC Foundation has been challenged by the Engelstad Family Foundation to raise $100,000 and establish a new scholarship opportunity for non-traditional students. The Never Too Late Scholarship will provide funds to students who are 23 years of age or older. These students often do not qualify for traditional financial aid and have little choice but to work part-time or even full-time while earning a credential at NCTC. Once raised, that amount will be matched with another $100,000 from the Engelstad Family Foundation to start the endowment with a total of $200,000. To date the challenge has raised $27,488. Donations will be accepted through April 1, 2018. A video was presented during the State of the College with further information and stories from students who have benefited from NCTC Foundation Scholarships.
