Two Northland Community and Technical College Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) students, Kortni Miller and Thomas Velasquez, recently presented a research study at the American Physical Therapy Association's Combined Sections Meeting in Las Vegas, NV.
This conference is the largest within the physical therapy profession, annually drawing over 11,000 professionals and students. The title of the student's research poster was "A National Survey and Analysis of PTA Students on PTA Program Length and Accrued Student Loan Debt". The purpose of the research was to determine the amount of student loan debt accrued by PTA students and if PTA students are in favor of a potential transition from an associate degree to a bachelor degree model.
Over 900 research posters were presented at the conference and Miller and Velasquez’s poster was the only one presented by PTA students. They were chosen to present by a peer reviewed selective process. According to PTA program director Justin Berry, “It is very rare for PTA students from any college to present at the national level.”
The two plan to formally submit the research to a physical therapy journal in the future.
