FBO owner/Aircraft Mechanic

Job Description:
Estherville Aviation, Inc., located in Estherville, Iowa, a small, rural community with an active GA airport, is looking for the right person to step in and be trained to purchase the maintenance FBO business and be the airport manager for the city of Estherville.
Estherville has a population of about 6000 people and is located about 8 miles south of Minnesota and 80 miles east of South Dakota. The airport has about 23 aircraft locally based and is home to Iowa Lakes Community Colleges flight traing program.
Estherville Aviation, Inc. is a small “mom & pop” FBO which specializes in GA maintenance on piston aircraft. We are service centers for Cirrus, Flight Design (CT), Tecnam, Remos, and Rotax two- & four-stroke engines. We sell 100LL and Jet-A fuel, own a Piper Archer for rental and instruction, and sell pilot supplies, etc. Our main business is aircraft maintenance in a heated 80 x 80 shop.
Paul Slaughter, the president of Estherville Aviation, has been here since 1987 and is also the airport manager for the city. This manager position includes additional responsibilities and provides a small salary and a house on the field in which to live. This position is separate from the FBO ownership and is arranged with the airport commission to whom the manager answers. A Bachelors degree is preferred for the airport manager position.
We are looking for an individual(s) who wants to make a career in general aviation maintenance, owning & growing their own business, supporting the local aviation community and becoming part of the general community, making Estherville their home. It would be ideal for a young family who likes rural life as the airport is located 3 miles from town and back from the highway. It has been a good place to raise our family.
The business has grown such that it is becoming diffcult for one person, myself, to do all that needs to be done. If the growth is to be maintained, an additional full or part time helper/technician will need to be added. My current vision is to see the new owner/mechanic be a “trainee” as they learn the trade, business operations, and most importantly – good customer service. An Inspectors Authorization will eventually be needed, but I see myself staying on for a while in some capacity to help the new owner learn and add the training they want in order to keep the service centers desired.
This position is not for everybody. It requires an owner/technician with a high level of integrity to do the job well, and the initiative to do the job thoroughly and with an attitude to serve the customer. Owning ones own business takes a LOT of time in addition to shop work. I compare this to dairy farming; there is always something that needs to be done and usually requries someone to be here. If you are looking for an 8-5/five days a week job, this is not for you. If you are motivated by a challenge and want to have the freedom to make as much money as you want and see how much you can grow a business, this may be a good fit for you.
This is not a position for a hired A&P mechanic looking to get experience and then move on. This is an opportunity for a motivated individual to work toward owning their own aircraft repair business for a number of years. If you think this might be a good fit for you, contact me via e-mail (preferred) to discuss more of the details.
