Road Maintenance Team Member

Job Description:  
The Minnehaha County Highway Department is currently accepting applications for a Road Maintenance Team Member. This position performs semi-skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work on County highway and bridge systems, maintenance buildings, and related facilities and equipment.

Operate basic light, medium, and heavy equipment including pavers, dump trucks, motor graders, front end loaders, bucket loaders, bulldozers, skid steers, boom trucks, backhoes, fork lifts, bladers, mowers, etc. Perform snow and ice removal procedures. Operate snow plows, truck plows, and sanders. Haul snow. Spread deicing chemicals. Haul materials including rock, gravel, salt, sand, dirt, asphalt, and other related materials. Service, repair, and unclog culverts and ditches. Repair and maintain County roads including potholes, shoulders, and right-of-ways. Install and repair fence wires and fence posts. May be required to perform duties of a similar, or lower, level of responsibility on the highway bridge or sign team to meet demands for operational efficiency.
High school diploma or GED and one year of related work experience. Comparable combination of education and experience may be considered. Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Drivers License with air brake endorsement and must maintain a safe driving record with Minnehaha County. Must successfully complete pre-employment background process. Ability to perform heavy manual labor for an extended period of time in various weather conditions. Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions. Knowledge of equipment, materials and tools used in routine road construction and repair work. Ability to safely and efficiently use and maintain a variety of hand tools and power tools. Knowledge of, and adherence to, safety regulations and safe work methods. Ability to respond to weather and road related emergencies on an on-call or call-in basis including during nights, weekends, and holidays. Subject to 24-hour emergency call. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public. Ability to maintain professional appearance and demeanor.
Class A Commercial Drivers License with hazardous materials endorsement. Knowledge of relevant codes and regulations including Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) regulations.
