Career Counseling
The Kuder Career Planning System is an online career exploration program used to assist anyone who wants to explore their career and life long career plans. It analyses your interests and self reported skills, as well as work values and compares your results with actual people who love what they do. These three areas are also helpful in assisting people to determine what features are most important to them in a career. It will help you find current career options that would be most satisfying to you. It is free, and once registered with the program, it may be accessed on the internet anytime.
Minnesota Career Information System (MCIS) is a career information system for people of all ages, very user-friendly and is available free of charge through NCTC-EGF Counselor offices and the library to both students and prospective students. MCIS aids in the process of making better career decisions by providing accurate, comprehensive and current career information resources.
Campbell Interest and Skill Survey (CISS), Career Assessment Inventory, (CAI Voc version): These two inventories analyze your self-reported interests and skills for students interested in baccalaureate degrees or vocational education.
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI): (form M) personal preferences that influence your learning and work style. Understanding your style can improve your education/career planning, performance, communication and satisfaction.
For more information about these resources, or help in choosing the one most appropriate for you, please contact a counselor for an appointment.
Academic Advising
Recognizing the importance of the academic advisement process and the connection between the growth and development of each individual student, counselors are assigned to advise "undeclared" major students. In the academic advisor capacity, the counselor assists students with scheduling, academic policy and procedural interpretation, curriculum questions, referrals to on campus resources or personnel, etc. to provide the student with personally relevant information and instructional assistance.
Personal Counseling
The Northland College counseling offices are staffed with professionally trained and licensed counselors who work with students individually or in groups to assist them with their personal issues and concerns. Issues discussed with a counselor are treated confidentially. NCTC counselors also provide support through the Carl Perkins Grant for students enrolled in technical programs who are single parents, displaced homemakers, single pregnant women and students who are enrolled in a program which is considered non-traditional for their gender.
Online Screening for Mental Health
Northland College provides access to a free online screening tool created by College Response. Each screening is confidential and anonymous. This online screening tool allows students to complete any or all of the following confidential screenings:
- Alcohol
- Eating Disorders
- Depression
- Bipolar Depression
- Anxiety Disorder
- Post-traumatic Stress Disorder
At the end of each anonymous and confidential screening, you will receive an immediate result which can be printed and, if you choose, taken to a counselor for further discussion and interpretation. These screenings are not a substitute for a complete evaluation, but screenings can help you determine if your symptoms are consistent with any of the concerns listed above. We encourage you to contact a Northland Counselor, if you have any questions or concerns regarding your online screening results.
