Select: Student Radio Hosts | Communication Staff | Community Volunteers

Jared May

How did you get involved in Pioneer 90.1? "I had the station recommended to me by a friend, and I started listening to it and enjoying it. I soon heard the call for volunteer programming. I stopped by the station, expressed my interest, and about a week later I was 'on air'."

What do you do at the station? "I select and narrate the broadcast of a classic alt-rock album on Saturdays at 5 and 11 p.m.  I call it "The Record Store."  I used to host a program called "Black Wednesday", and later renamed "Black Saturday", named for my love of Frank Black's music and the day it was broadcast. It featured alternative and indie rock, classic and new. I'm also active in selecting new music for the station and reviewing albums sent to us. I also regularly stand against brick walls looking cool."

"To me, Pioneer 90.1 is... a great alternative to commercial radio. I've always had a disdain for radio stations in general, because I could never find one that played music I liked...not to mention that you might hear a particular song 10 times a day. So, by hosting my own program, I make sure that what I think should be played, gets played. How cool is that? It's a great opportunity to be able to have an influence on a local radio station."

How did you get involved in Pioneer 90.1: "On a whim, and fully expecting to be rushed out the entry, I walked into the studio and asked if I might learn how to be a DJ without enrolling in classes. Little did I know that KSRQ was beginning to look at community volunteers to round out their programming. I'd wanted to be in radio since I was a young boy, listening to the rock jocks from WLS in Chicago and KOMA in Oklahoma."

What do you do at the station: "I'm host of The Club Lounge, aired from 1 to 6 each Sunday afternoon. We feature a bit of a nostalgia music, highlighting songs from the big band era as well as the crooners and cabaret singers who perpetuate the Great American Songbook. It's not unlikely to find new artists like Peter Cincotti, Michael Buble, Madeleine Peyroux, and Jamie Cullum alongside Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and Ella Fitzgerald on stage in The Club Lounge. We also feature some seldom-heard songs from the 30's, 40's, and 50's. Adding to the variety of adult standards are performances by such jazz greats as Oscar Peterson, Chris Botti, Errol Garner, and others."

To me, Pioneer 90.1 is...: "a wonderful opportunity to be involved in a variety of community-based programming, offering listeners something that is sadly lacking in broadcasting: live radio. It's a tremendous rush to be able to touch listeners in the same manner that pioneers of live radio, like Chicago's Dick Biondi and the famed Arthur Godfrey did as they introduced new and established music performers. Pioneer 90 is a true gem in a part of the state that hasn't all the entertainment benefits of the larger metro areas."
