How Online Learning Works

How do students learn online? What does the "classroom" look like? How are courses structured? Turn any computer into an interactive Northland classroom - day or night from the comfort of your home.

Online learning is computer-based instruction where course work and instruction occurs through the Internet. Most classes proceed in a progressive manner where you have one semester to complete your course, similar to an onsite experience.

The Interactive Classroom

You have interaction with your instructor and peers through the use of messaging systems, forums, email, and message boards. You will generally have assignments due each week with quizzes and tests mixed in, much like classroom education. Many jobs require a strong working knowledge of the Internet and technology; doesn't it make sense to get your education on the same equipment you are preparing to work on?

Here To Help You Succeed

If computer-based learning concerns you because of a lack of familiarity, Northland offers several support services to help you succeed.

All you need to access our courses is a computer (PC or Mac) with a reliable Internet connection, up-to-date web browser, and CD/DVD drive. And, to help you navigate the online learning environment, Distance Minnesota and Northland provide exceptional technical support you can count on.

Quality Matters (QM) is a faculty-centered, peer-review process and rubric designed to certify the quality of online courses. The nationally recognized QM process is based on the research literature and best practices for online teaching and learning.

Northland has been a QM subscribing institution since 2010. Faculty and online course designers at the college use QM to guide course design decisions and as the foundation for course review and revision. The review process is designed to ensure that course expectations are clearly communicated and that student learning is assessed based on those expectations. The QM review also ensures that online courses include meaningful interaction between instructors and students, and with the course content.
