THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn.- Northland Community & Technical College student Nick Dokkin was recently named to the 2014 All-Minnesota Academic Team. The All-Minnesota Academic Team is recognition from Phi Theta Kappa, two-year college presidents, and community college state associations based on outstanding academic performance and service to the college and community.
Dokkin was a 2012 grad of Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls, Minn. He was able to participate in post secondary options at Northland while at Lincoln. This enabled him to jumpstart his college education and save money in the process. The IGNITE scholarship as well as other Northland Foundation scholarships made Northland a natural choice for him after high school.
During his time at Northland, he kept active within the campus community. He was a member of PTK, Student Senate, and was an Ambassador. He credits Northland's faculty with helping him find his path to success. "Not one teacher was unwilling to help in any way. They want you to succeed," he emphasized. When he got to Northland he was unsure of what he wanted to major in. While getting his A.A., he found the broad spectrum of classes he took helped him narrow down what he wanted to major in when he transferred after graduation. "It gave me time to make an informed decision. Northland is a great start for anyone, right out of high school or coming back later in life," he said. He graduated from Northland in May with his Liberal Arts degree with highest honors. He will start at the University of North Dakota this fall where he will seek a degree in Higher Education/Administration.
Dokkin was also selected as the 2014 Student of the Year at Northland.
Nick said that he was grateful for all the experiences he has had and the people he has met and worked with over the last two years at Northland; these have made "doing college" so much easier.
