Thief River Falls Co-Students of the Year Named

The Graduation Committee of Northland Community and Technical Colleges Thief River Falls campus has recently announced its 2011 Student of the Year selections: Houston Kirkeide of Thief River Falls and Briar Verbout of Goodridge, MN.

Houston Kirkeide is a graduate of Lincoln High School. Upon high school graduation, he served in active duty in the United States Air Force, with a tour of duty in Afghanistan. While at Northland he has been active in the Professional Aviation Maintenance Association (PAMA), Student Senate, and Phi Theta Kappa. He served a term as PAMA president and is currently the Student Senate president. He was also named to the All-Minnesota Academic Team. During his free time, he enjoys sailing and ice fishing.

Kirkeide is graduating from Northland with an associate of applied science degree in Aviation Maintenance. He has accepted a job in corporate aviation and plans to continue his education on a part-time basis as well as pursue additional ratings for his pilot license. Houston is the son of Amy Steva and Harlan Kirkeide.

Briar Verbout is a graduate of Goodridge High School. While in high school, Briar was a three-sport athlete who participated in football, basketball, and baseball (Thief River Falls) and was also active in student senate. While at Goodridge, he attended Northland as a post-secondary student for two years until his graduation, upon which he attended Northland full-time. He was a member of both the Pioneer football and baseball teams and has been active in the Northland Student Senate.

Verbout is graduating from Northland with an associate of arts degree in Liberal Arts. He plans to attend North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND, where he will pursue a degree in Natural Resource Management.

Success Coordinator Jason Pangiarella, who has worked with both men in Northlands Student Senate, says, Houston and Briar exhibit the best of our student body here at Northland College. They are dedicated, responsible, industrious, and have been fantastic students. They have a bright and exciting future ahead and we wish them all the best as newly minted alumni of Northland.

Student of the Year nominees are submitted by faculty and employees of NCTC TRF and compiled and announced by the Campus Graduation Committee.
