With the passage of the 19th Amendment to the United States constitution, 16 million women won the right to vote after a 72 year struggle.
The American National Red Cross was established in 1881 by Civil War nurse, Clara Barton who is credited with United States government involvement in the distribution of relief in times of calamities such as famine, flood, earthquake, cyclones, and pestilence.
Shirley Chisholm of Brooklyn was the first Black woman to run for president of the United States. She entitled her autobiography Unbought and Unbossed.
