New Venture Center

The New Venture Center is a resource center that provides support, advocacy, referrals, programs and workshops for NCTC students. The New Venture Center and its Director, Kelsy Blowers, serve as a resource for NCTC students who are single parents, displaced homemakers, single pregnant women, or are enrolled in a program which is considered nontraditional for their gender.

Who is Eligible?

You are eligible for services from the New Venture Center if you meet any of the following:

  • Are a single parent with custody or joint custody of your children.
  • Are a displaced homemaker - you have relied on a spouse for income in the past and have lost that source of income.
  • Are a single pregnant woman.
  • Are entering a career or enrolled in a program that is considered nontraditional for your gender. Examples include women enrolled in Architectural Technology, Auto Body Collision, Automotive Service, Aviation Maintenance, Construction Electricity, Criminal Justice, Electronics Technology or Welding Technology. Other examples include men enrolled in Administrative Support, Cosmetology, Nursing, or Pharmacy Technology.

Due to federal funding criteria, some services are limited to students who meet at least one of the criteria listed above and who are also enrolled in an occupational/technical course of study.

The New Venture Center is a Program, a Place, and a Person.

Program

  • Networking opportunities with other students/support groups
  • Workshops, speakers and seminars

Place

  • Comfortable lounge to study or talk
  • Resource library of books, audio cassettes and videos on a wide variety of topics including: Parenting; Stress Management; Job Seeking; Self Improvement
  • TV/VCR for viewing and listening to library resources
  • Multi-media computer for completing homework assignments and exploring career options

Person

  • Advocacy - assistance in exploring concerns and potential solutions
  • Resources
  • Referrals to services and agencies both on and off campus
  • Support with transition between school and work
