History Instructor Receives Prestigious Invitation
Thief River Falls, MN (July 2, 2010) - Dr. Jack Haymond, History Instructor, at Northland Community and Technical College, has been selected as one of twenty-five educators to participate in a National Endowment for Humanities (NEH) Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshop. Dr. Haymond will attend the 2010 NEH Workshop, “History and Commemoration: Legacies of the Pacific War” in Honolulu, Hawaii later this summer.
According to the NEH website, “Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshops are offered by the National Endowment for the Humanities to provide community college faculty with the opportunity to engage in intensive study and discussion of important topics and issues in American history and culture, while providing them with direct experiences in the interpretation of significant historical and cultural sites and the use of archival and other primary evidence.”
“The workshops are designed to present the best available scholarship on a specific landmark or related cluster of landmarks, while enabling participants to gain a sense of the importance of historical and cultural places, to make connections between the workshop content and what they teach, and to develop materials for their classrooms and, if applicable, for their research interests.” During the workshop Dr. Haymond will be visiting Pearl Harbor, Fort DeRussy Army Museum, Hickam Air Force Base, Honouliuli Internment Camp and the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
“Northland is very proud to have a faculty member of Dr. Haymond’s caliber be recognized by his selection to participate in this highly regarded workshop.” Norma Konschak, Dean of Academic Affairs noted. “This is a great opportunity for Northland Community and Technical College to participate in scholarly endeavors at the national/international level.” Due to the generosity of the National Endowment of the Humanities (NEH), a stipend will provided to Dr. Haymond to defray a portion of the costs related to his travel.
