Lockdown Browser

Respondus LockDown Browser is a secure browser for taking quizzes in Desire2Learn. It prevents students from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during a quiz. If a Desire2Learn quiz requires that Respondus LockDown Browser be used, students will not be able to take the quiz with a standard web browser.

Respondus LockDown Browser should only be used for taking Desire2Learn Quizzes. It should not be used in other areas of Desire2Learn.

Download & Install Steps

  • LockDown Browser does not work with Mozilla FireFox.
  • Ensure that Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher, and Windows XP or higher is being used.
  • Click to test computer for the latest version of Java.
  • Click to download and install Respondus LockDown Browser.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the install.
  • LockDown Browser icon will appear on destop when down load is complete.

Taking a Quiz that requires LockDown Browser

  • 1. Make sure to use a hard wired connection to the internet. Do not use wi-fi / wireless when taking a quiz.
  • 2. Close all programs -- including iTunes, chats, instant messaging, Skype, Google Desktop, etc.
  • 3. From the desktop, double-click on the “LockDown Browser” shortcut (for Macintosh users, launch “LockDown Browser” from the Applications folder).
  • 4. If prompted to close a blocked program (e.g. screen capture, instant messaging), choose Yes.
  • 5. The browser will open to the Desire2Learn login page.
  • 6. Log into Desire2Learn by entering your username and password.
  • 7. Select the appropriate course title, select the Quizzes link, and then select the appropriate Quiz.
  • 8. Select the Start Quiz! link.
        (If the Start Quiz! link does not appear, it means that you are not running the Respondus LockDown Browser.)
  • 9. Click the appropriate answer, click the Save button for each question.
  • 10. The Submit Quiz button must be clicked to exit the quiz and Lockdown Browser.

Troubleshooting

Do not use WiFi (wireless internet connection) when taking a quiz/test

If you lose connection to the internet while taking a quiz/test, it will freeze lockdown browser. Make sure to use a hard wired connection to the internet.

If lockdown browser freezes before starting a quiz/test

Close lockdown browser. A security pop-up appears, click OK through questions, relaunch lockdown browser, log in, click on course title, click on Quizzes, click on the quiz name, click Start Quiz, Save after each question, click Submit Quiz.

If lockdown browser freezes while taking a quiz/test

Power off the computer, reboot the computer, relaunch Lockdown Browser, log in, click on the course title, click Quizzes, click on the quiz name, click Continue Quiz, Save after each question, click Submit Quiz. If alloted quiz time has expired, will not be allowed to continue quiz.

If lockdown browser indicates to close Outlook but the program is not open

Right click on the taskbar, click on Start Task Manager, click on the Servics tab, click on BcmSqul...Business Manager SQL Service, and stop service.
Or click on Start, Control Panel, Programs and Features, select Business Contact Manager, right click uninstall.
