In 2009 he was the recipient of the 2009 Agassiz Valley Conference Coach of the Year award.

 

After playing one season at Northland College (1993), Coach Dowers transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Superior where he played one season before shoulder surgery forced him to take a season off to rehabilitate. He then transferred on to Bemidji State University where he received his Bachelors Degrees in Social Studies and History. During his senior year at Bemidji he was a key piece of the 1997 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship team. Staying on as an assistant coach at Bemidji State University for parts of the next two seasons before leaving Bemidji for work.
