Pioneer Women's Basketball Team places fifth in National Tournament

THIEF RIVER FALLS, MN (March 16, 2011) – The Northland women’s basketball team has placed fifth in the nation in the NJCAA Division III. On March 10, the team made its fourth trip to the national tournament, this year held in Rochester, MN. Northland placed seventh last year and in 2007.

Northland won its first game in overtime against Mohawk Valley Community College from New York 59 to 50. It lost its next two games to Roxbury Community College from Massachusetts 58 to 72 and Brookdale Community College from New Jersey 61 to 82.

Coach Shannon Nelson was named the NJCAA District H coach of the year, and Jodi Berdahl was among three Minnesota players named to the all-tournament team. Nelson received her award at the tournament banquet, where the team also enjoyed competing in challenges styled after the game show “Minute to Win It.”

"I feel so fortunate to have been able to coach this particular group of young women for my first season here at Northland,” says Nelson. “They persevered through what can often be a long and grueling season and I am so proud of each and every one of them. This team accomplished great things and we plan to continue this winning tradition at Northland for years to come."
