Northland Women’s Basketball Team Advances to Regional Tournament

THIEF RIVER FALLS, MN (March 4, 2011) –This past weekend the Pioneer women’s basketball team advanced to its regional tournament. The team, which placed fourth in the state tournament, will host a game against Hibbing this Saturday. The winner will head to the national tournament in Rochester, March 10-12.

The women’s team tied for the Northern Division championship, with six wins and two losses. “We played a lot of Division I and II colleges earlier in the season,” says coach Shannon Nelson, “and that made us a better team going into the conference.” Six of the team’s eleven players are from Thief River Falls. “It was great to host the state tournament so that our fans could see us play,” says Nelson.

Nelson was named the Northern Division coach of the year, and Jodi Berdahl, Jessica Fontes, Brittany Wiseth, and Cassie Gunderson were named to the Northern All-Division Team. Berdahl and Fontes also made the All-State Team.

Though the Northland men’s team did not advance beyond the state tournament, like the women’s team it tied for the Northern Division championship, at eleven wins and one loss. The men won their first game against Fergus Falls at the state tournament in Anoka last weekend, but lost to Rochester, the eventual state champions. Terrell Lipkins, Zac Creviston, and Damontay Matthews were named to the Northern All-Division Team, and Lipkins and Creviston were also named to the All-State Team.
