Guy Finstrom named NCJAA Division III Basketball Coach of the Year


Guy Finstrom, head women’s basketball coach for the Pioneers of Northland Community and Technical College, has been named District H Women’s Division III Coach of the Year by the National Junior College Athletic Association.



Finstrom, a Buxton, N.D. native, received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Mayville (N.D.) State University.

He came to Northland as assistant football coach and head baseball coach in the fall of 2000. He was promoted to head football coach for the 2001 season. In the 2006/2007 season, Finstrom accepted the position of head basketball coach of the Pioneer Women’s Basketball team. Finstrom teaches in the health and physical education department, he also handles recruiting for the football, softball and women’s basketball programs.



In Finstrom’s first year of coaching women’s basketball, the team qualified for the state and regional tournament defeating Itasca Community College by 66/64 in the Region 13-B Tournament. This victory qualified the women Pioneers for the Division 3 National Tournament at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica New York, where they finished 7th place with a victory over Holyoke Community College of Massachusetts.



Since 2006, Coach Finstrom has led the Pioneers to four straight Minnesota College Athletic Conference State tournaments, three Region 13B appearances with championships in 2007 in 2010 and runner’s up in 2008. The 2007 and the most recent 2010 team reached NJCAA Division III Women’s Basketball appearances, placing 7th in 2007 and 7th in 2010.



“I am very proud of the coaching staff. Coach Finstrom puts a lot of hard work into all of his programs which is evident in the continued success of his teams,” said NCTC Athletic Director Paul Peterson.
