Article by TRF Times.

Talk about living up to expectations.
The Northland Community and Technical College volleyball team edged Minnesota State-Fergus Falls
25-21, 21-25, 24-26, 25-21, 15-8 Saturday in the third place match at the 2012 National Junior College Athletic Association Division III national championships in Rochester.
The Pioneers were ranked No. 3 in the preseason polls and were seeded third in the NJCAA national tournament.
It was a 27-8 season for head coach Abdul Chamma and the Pioneers.
Appearing in the national tournament as the NJCAA Region 13B champion for the second straight year, Northland
beat sixth-seeded Howard (Md.) Community College in the Friday quarterfinals 31-29, 25-21, 12-25, 25-11.
Second-seeded Rock Valley (Ill.) College swept the Pioneers 25-12, 27-25, 25-19 in the semifinals later that same day.
A year ago Northland lost to Rock Valley in the national tournament third place match.
Rock Valley completed a 44-7 season by knocking off top-seeded Brookhaven (Texas) College 25-22, 25-10, 25-27, 25-18 in the championship match.
Minnesota State-Fergus Falls was the NJCAA Region 13A winner.
Brianna Spong and Katie Marynik of Northland were named to the all-tournament team. Spong is a 6-0 sophomore middle hitter from Oklee.
Marynik is a 5-11 freshman outside
hitter from Grand Forks, N.D.
“We had a chance again to make it to the national tournament because of the hard work the players put into their practice time,” offered Chamma.
“They played great. We had our problems, but they dealt with it quickly. For every set and play there was a star. Everyone of them performed like one.”
In addition to thanking the players for their efforts throughout the season,
Chamma gave recognition to assistant coach Courtney Halvorson, the Thief River Falls Sports Boosters and the college staff. “Special thanks to Courtney for her dedication and
hard work and for putting up with me,” he said.
