Pioneers repeat as Region 13B champion

by Scott DCamp
The Northland Community and Technical College volleyball squad will make a return trip to nationals following a three-set sweep over top-seeded Central Lakes College Saturday in Brainerd.
NCTC Head Coach Abdul Chamma said his team’s main goal entering the championship match was to prevent Central Lakes from playing its system.
The Pioneers and Raiders are quite familiar with one another.
The two MCAC teams split their regular season meetings, each of which went five sets. In the rubber match, the Pioneers never let up and secured a 25-14, 25-19, 25-15 sweep Central Lakes.
Chamma attributed the decisive victory to team work. He said the 2012 squad is a special team, the way they play and have fun on the court.
“They were confident and they are committed to themselves and as a team and to the college,” Chamma said. “We were very aggressive and their commitment was ‘we will not
loose twice to the same team.’”
To reach Saturday’s championship match, the Pioneers had to endure a four-set match against Itasca Community College Friday night, 25-19, 14-25, 25-21, 25-22.
“We started slow vs. Itasca then the girls started playing their own game,” Chamma said.
“We were very aggressive on locking and attacking. Our back row defense were fantastic.
Everyone was awesome.”
Pioneer teammates Bailee Walker and Ashley Lindgren were named all tournament team.
Northland will compete in the 2012 NJCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Championships Nov. 9-10 at the UCR Regional Sports Center in
Rochester. Seedings for that tournament have not been announced.
