Northland to Host Women’s Regional Championship Game

The Pioneer women’s basketball team will host the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 13B Women’s College Basketball play-off game against Rainy River on Saturday, March 6th, at 3:00 p.m., in the Northland College gymnasium. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for senior citizens.

The winner will advance to the NJCAA Division III national tournament that starts March 10th hosted by the Rochester Amateur Sports Commission in Rochester, MN.

Northland finished as the Consolation Champions and Rainy River placed sixth in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference (MCAC) state tournament hosted by Northland College February 26-28. Northland was the top MCAC Northern Division team in the tournament and Rainy River was the second highest seed in the tournament.

Northland split with Rainy River during the regular season winning 81-52 on January 9th in Thief River Falls and lost 60-67 on February 6th in International Falls. In the MCAC State Women’s Basketball Tournament in the Consolation Championship game on Feb. 28, Northland defeated Rainy River 73-55. Rainy River is a very physical and aggressive team,” said Coach Guy Finstrom. “It is hard to beat a team back-to-back, so we have to be well prepared for this game.” Three years ago, Northland beat host Itasca 66-64 in the Region 13B game to advance to the national tournament. The Pioneers are 18-12.
