Experiencing the Heart of the Matter
What is your favorite memory while in school?
"My favorite memory while in school at Northland was going through my clinicals with my three classmates. There were only four of us that graduated in ’05 from the Cardiovascular Technology Program so we were close. We had a good time! I also miss taking Anatomy and Physiology from Margarita Bracamonte. She was an amazing teacher and I miss her classes!!!"
What are your thoughts on attending Northland?
"There’s no other college in the area where you can get the training I did. I’ve talked with my current co-workers about their previous training and it sounds to me that Northland ranks up there as one of the top technical colleges in the Country."
Did your experience at Northland contribute to your current career?
"My experience at Northland was excellent. Northland prepared and trained me for my current field through strenuous coursework and hands on clinical lab work. The Cardiovascular Technology Program at Northland instilled in me what it means to be a successful Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist."
Has your career evolved since finishing school?
"My career has taken a different path. After working at the Heart and Vascular Center Cardiac Cath Lab at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, ND I decided to become a Lokum. My job would be to travel around the country and work in different Cardiac Cath Labs for 13 weeks at a time. Currently, I work at the San Diego Heart Institute via the Cardiac Cath Lab in San Diego, CA. It’s been the best decision I’ve ever made. I love Southern California…the weather is amazing!!"
Any advice for current students?
"Cardiovascular Technology is very hard. Don’t get flustered. Seek as much help as possible if you don’t understand something. You need to understand every possible angle when dealing with the heart."
Where is the Cardiovascular Technology Program at now?
Started in 1993, the CVT program boasts a 100% placement record. It is no surprise that the program continues to grow. Currently there are 17 students. A typical CVT student will have acquired approximately 1,000 hours of clinical experience. Beginning Cardiovascular Invasive Specialists can earn over $40,000 annually.
